Trying to make ends meet
The bills lie on the table, unopened. Maybe if I don't look at them or open them they will just go away. I know better but when there is no other solution in sight it is the only one I can think of. I don't answer phone calls that are not from someone I know since it is probally a bill collector. I have been without internet for over a month since i didn't have the $45.00 to pay it and my cellphone was off for a week making it impossible for the doctors or nurses to come by since they call first. The disconnect on my lights is on the 9th. I have no idea where to get the money from. The only good news is that the city will not allow them to cut the lights of due to the extreme heat right now. My little disability check of $693.00 a month has long been gone, the rent, the food, the co-pay on the 27 medications I require, and basic necessities. All of the social services are out of funding to help, there is no family and no friends. At least I have a roof over my head. Still I don't answer the door or go outside. This sucks!! This is what I have to show for the years of hard work I put in since age 15, the taxes I paid, for being a good citizen. God Bless America!!
I sat down to watch the news with the volume very low so no one would know I was at home. Then it really came home to me just how bad it is for the elderly and disabled here in the U.S depending on the megar retirement and disability benefits. The expose was of a 87 year old woman walking with another woman of near the same age. One had lights but no water or gas, the other had water and gas but no lights. Together they went from one house to another, sharing in order for both of them to survive. They could barely walk the 1 block distance between their houses, using canes and each other for stability. The expose also showed the interior of the homes. The roofs were leaking so bad the sheet rock had fallen, the walls were ruined, and the woman had to move her bed constantly to keep it from being soaked. They survive on the social Security Benefits they recieve each month and the goodwill of neighbors and community services. Still they were able to show gratefulness and a positive attitude in such dire times. it made me ashamed of myself.
These are our elderly...they should be in their golden years after many years of hard work and paying in to a system that is now failing them. Both are alone, their husbands passed along before them, the children long married and moved away. In todays society they are for the most part invisible. We don't see them or we don't want to see them as it might tug at our councience. They remind me of my grandparents, my parents and other elderly persons who have touched my life over the years. Instead of sitting on the porch in their rocking chairs they are looking for work at Walmart greeting us as we pass in and out. I see them on the streets pushing carts with everything in the world they own inside. I see them sleeping on the sidewalks, against abandoned buildings and begging in the streets. It tears at my heart, it shreds my soul. These are someones wife, daughter, sister, mother or grandmother. What happened?? How could we let them down in such a demeaning way? Allow them to live like they are in a third world country?
The thing that angered me the most was that in the same newscast. We are giving $ 8 BILLION dollars in aid to Pakistan. Amazing...humanitarian aid. I am sorry for Pakistan, for Bosnia, for Mexico, but I am even more sorry for the persons living here who are citizens of what is considered the greatest country in the world, and they are destitute, starving, living under bridges, and we are passing out billions in HUMANITARIAN AID to all the other countries. Humanity starts at home. These are our ancestors, on the backs of whom we built this great nation, whom we have to thank for the rights and freedoms we enjoy. They are our sources of greatest wisdom. Please take a look around. this is not only a shame...IT IS AN AMERICAN DISGRACE!!

By the way Gnelson we are not a christian country. This country was built on people wanting to be free and to practice thier own religion without the authorities barging through the door and having their heads cut off. DONT FORGET THE FREEDOM OF RELIGION!!!!!! du
Amen christalluna1124: I agree with you totally. We subsidize everyone on the planet except our own, we the taxpayers!!!!
Our so called representatives have to argue about extending unemployment, but have no problem cutting taxes for the wealthy or throwing our money away on bailouts.
Those of us who play by the rules, and do what is expected get bent over with no Vaseline. Sorry for the rant, excellent hub and subject matter. Voted up, marked useful and shared.
To me it is a shame that so much money goes to other countries when we have so may elderly walking the streets right here in the United States. Why can't the government take 8 billion dollars and fix the sad state our people on disability and elderly are in? Your hub talks about community and togetherness, that is where it has to begin, but the state should also care about what is happening to their own. Some of the elderly people I know don't have family, no children or siblings. No one to take care of them. Being in a rural area I think sometimes is a lot easier than being in a larger metro area. Good writing Chris :)
Wow this hub really choked me up. How sad that the elderly are treated in such a disgraceful manner. Where are their children in all of this ? In alot of foreign cultures once they reach a certain age they move in with their children so they can be taken care of. These days I know things are really tough but I think the children should show the unconditional love thst these Moms and Grandmas and Grandpas gave them as children. This is a really sad statement about the condition of our modern society.
When you point your finger at the government for help - 3 fingers point back at yourself.
Personal responsibility is what is needed to be taught..... without first being personally responsible there is no extra to help another.
As the stewardess on the jet teaches - "put on your own oxygen mask first and then help those around you."
It has nothing to do with religion..... it is personal responsibility and caring/sharing that is needed - add to that a government that keeps taxes low enough that a person can share when they want too!
Paying taxes to an incompetent government only makes matters worse.
Certainly, from a Northe European perspective, the US seems avery tough place to be if you have no money. Youe welfare system is nothing if not ruthless and, with the current economic crisis, must be allowing terrible hardships to occur. Strange for a country with such a hardline Christain bias?
Well said, and it is such a disgrace, and we can't depend on our government to care, to come to their aid, instead they are last on the totem, the last to be cared for, yet their willing tax dollars have reared well more than their own kids and grandkids for all of their working years. Very truly an American Disgrace.
It is up to us to help one another. Only the efforts of communities can really help the elderly. Communication is the key. Let the local contractors know that someone who needs help....when their home needs maintenance. They can write it off as a charitable donation.
Tell people about government assistance they might be missing out on. Contact local churches and charitable organizations. Set up baskets in grocery stores for food.
Many people will help if they know who and how to help.
Paying taxes to an incompetent government can't be our excuse for not helping a needy neighbor.
America is and always has been....about people.

Really ,words fail me..the land of the free!Take care and you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Ita.
This is a subject that should be written and talked about over and over again. It seems occasionally politicians will do something when they get tired of hearing things over and over again. Our society tends to push the elderly to the back, not giving them the respect they are due. Thank you for writing on a vitally important topic.
I'm ashamed of so many Americans. The rich complain about their taxes and they start a war every few years to recoup their losses or expand their wealth. Nobody is worth millions of dollars. I have no athletes who are idols. I have no super models I care about. And Tommy Hilfiger takes textiles to a commonwealth where he settles a class action suit for his sweat-shop. Meanwhile Tommy's shirt sells for $150. At Macy's a Calvin Klein sell for $52. We have no leaders. Thank you!
I am so mad i could spit nails!!! How could this be in the 'land of the free' This past week, the Clinton,s spent millions on a wedding, President Obama,s wife is on vacation in Spain and it,s reported that the hotel
cost is 6000.00 a day, now don,t get me wrong, i voted for Clinton and Obama and i will vote for Obama again,
but how can they spend money like that when so many people are hurting in this country? I am so sorry that you are having such a bad time, you are such a good writer.Don,t give up, fight for more help.
God Bless
You hit the nail on the head with this hub. We have kids and elderly who go to bed hungry every night, if they have a bed. And the rich don't want to pay more taxes. And we are a christian nation?

This post should be revisited a million times if there was any justice in the world with what is trying to be done to Medicare right now. I am on disability and in the same boat, I have no idea how I am going to continue to make it, as it is I am desperately seeking a cheaper rental to no avail and going deeper into debt every month. The truth is that no one who can really do anything about it gives a shit. My last hub lays out the real facts of that. God Bless.
